How To Protect Your Skin From Sun Damage

Did you know that UV rays from the sun are strongest between the hours of 10am and 4pm? It’s important to make sure you are practicing sun safety this summer by protecting your skin! There are two types of UV rays that the sun emits, both of which can be harmful.

UVA rays: UVA rays have the longest wavelength and are absorbed by the dermis skin layer reaching deep into the skin layers, causing sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer.

UVB rays: UVB rays, think of B for burns. Although they have a shorter wavelength, they are absorbed by the Epidermis skin layer and are responsible for surface damage such as sunburns and sun damage.

Below are 3 simple ways to help reduce the risk of sun damage.

1. Wear sunscreen, daily use of sunscreen can help reduce the risk of skin cancer and protect your skin from sun damage. Be sure to use sunscreen that offers an SPF of 30 or higher and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection.

2. Find shade, reduce the risk of sun damage by staying in the shade and protecting your skin. If possible, find shade under an umbrella or a tree when exposed to direct sunlight.

3. Protect your eyes, UV radiation can damage the eye’s surface tissue as well as the cornea and lens. Be sure to wear UV-blocking sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of eye diseases, growths, and blindness.

It is recommended to check your skin every quarter. Be sure to lookout for any new moles or sunspots that may appear and get checked right away.  Our network of virtual Providers are here to address any dermatology concerns you may have. To schedule an appointment today, click here to get started!
